Handheld X-Ray Sets
We know that these are becoming a much more common choice for new dental practices but we urge you to check with your RPA before purchasing such a set. There are many available which are extremely safe (giving no greater radiation dose than a conventional wall mounted set if used correctly) but there are also many which should not be bought. If the seller cannot provide a backscatter shield don’t go there. Also ask for information on shielding, focal length, leakage radiation etc. If this cannot be provided, be very wary.
Advice on issues such as this is one of the reasons to make use of the expertise of your appointed RPA/MPE.
Dental Guidance Notes
The revised Dental Guidance Notes were published on 13th October 2020. These can be freely downloaded from the link on our 'Links' page.
You should download a copy, familiarise yourselves with the changes, and contact your own RPA/MPE if necessary.
DENTAL RADIATION PROTECTION ADVISER
Radon
HSE are now taking a keener interest in the issue of radon in the workplace. If your practice is potentially in a 'radon affected area', or your radiation risk assessment recommends that you monitor for radon levels, you should ensure that this is actioned, in liaison with your RPA.
With Graham’s imminent retirement in April 2025, we will once again have only one RPA/MPE. This will inevitably mean that Liz will be extremely busy as she takes on Graham’s role with the dental engineers in addition to all the work she has with the dental practices. We will thus need some time to restructure our working practices and hope you will bear with us if this means we are less responsive than we would like to be during this period.
For a while we have only been accepting new clients via direct recommendations but due to the fact that we will be going back to a single RPA/MPE after several years of having two, we will not be accepting any new clients at this time. It has always been our goal as a company to provide levels of service which exceed our clients’ expectations and the restriction on new clients is in order to try and maintain our service level.
Be sure to keep us in mind for the future, and check our website regularly for updates as to when our client list will be re-opening.
